What Is Advent?

Advent is a season for remembering and rejoicing. As we look back at the humble birth of Jesus and look forward to His glorious return, we prepare our hearts with hope, repentance, joy, and worship. This guide is designed to help you and your family encounter the story of Jesus afresh each day.

Read the Scriptures and spend time in prayer and reflection. Advent comes from the Latin adventus, meaning “coming” or “arrival.”

For centuries, disciples of Jesus have celebrated Advent to remember His first coming and to joyfully anticipate His second. From His lowly birth in a feed trough, His humble life among the people of Israel, his atoning sacrificial death, to his glorious resurrection, Advent is a focused time to remember God's humility and faithfulness to His covenant promises and to stir our expectation for Jesus’ return to gloriously rule the earth from Jerusalem and fulfill his covenantal promises to Israel.

The Advent season officially begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas and continues until Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. In 2025, Advent begins on Sunday, November 30, and ends on Wednesday, December 24.

How Do I Celebrate Advent?

Throughout history, Christians have marked Advent through prayer, Scripture reading, fasting, worship, and acts of generosity.

During our Sunday worship service we will light a candle on our Advent wreath — one each week — symbolizing Jesus as “the light of the world” (John 1:4–9).

You may follow this guide individually, with your family, or with friends.

Read the passages, pray, and meditate on the story of Jesus’ first coming and the prophetic literature about Jesus’ second coming.

Week 1 – Patiently Waiting: The Promise of His Coming

November 30 – December 6

Theme Reflection: God’s promises never fail. From Genesis through the prophets, every promise and all the covenants point toward the coming Messiah, the anointed one of Israel that would reverse the curse of sin and death and would restore all things.

“so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.” — ‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭9‬:‭28‬

Advent begins with hope—the confident expectation that God will fulfill His Word.

The Messiah that existed before Creation, was prophesied about in the Garden, revealed in the Covenants, born in Bethlehem, died and resurrected in Jerusalem will return in glory as the King of Kings reigning on the earth.

Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.” Isaiah 9:7

As you finish this Advent journey, may your heart be renewed in hope, steadied in peace, filled with joy, and grateful with love.

The same Jesus who came in  humility will return in glory.

Let every candle lit and every Scripture read deepen your longing for His kingdom come—on earth as it is in heaven.

“He who testifies to these things says, ‘Surely I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!” — Revelation 22:20
